Dhal Black Curry

Enjoy dhal as a ‘black’ curry with roasted spices permeating a rich aroma and stronger flavours. The thick curry is infused with roasted coconut, mustard seeds, cumin and rice.

  • 150gms Dhal
  • ½ an Onion finely sliced
  • 3 Cloves Garlic
  • 3 Green Chilies finely sliced
  • 1 Sprig Curry Leaves
  • 1 Inch piece of Rampe Leaf
  • 1 ½ Teaspoons Roasted Chili Powder
  • 1 ½ Teaspoons Roasted Curry Powder
  • ½ Teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • ½ Teaspoon Mustard Seed
  • 1 Tablespoon Grated Coconut
  • 2 Knorr Cubes
  • 1 Teaspoon White Rice
  • 1 ½ Cups Coconut Milk
  • Water as required
  • Salt to taste


  • In a pan, boil the dhal with the roasted chili powder, roasted curry powder, garlic, rampe leaf, curry leaves, green chilies and Knorr cube. The level of water should be slightly more than the dhal.
  • In another pan, toast the coconut, mustard seed, cumin seeds and rice till golden in colour. Grind everything together.
  • Add this mixture to the dhal and stir well. Add salt to taste and serve hot.
