How to make Savoury Waffles

Waffles are a traditionally sweet breakfast item served with syrup or fruit. As a delicious alternative, savoury waffles are perfect for any meal of the day. Here are some ways to enjoy them along with some ideas for flavour combinations. They are an excellent base for toppings too (Fried chicken or devilled beef), so get creative, get waffling! You can add Knorr Maldive Fish Powder Mix to any of these recipes for added taste and flavour.

Potato waffles

Melt butter in a pan over medium heat. Cook and stir onion and garlic in the melted butter until onion is tender, 5 to 7 minutes. Preheat the waffle maker. Combine onion mixture, mashed potatoes, flour, eggs, salt and pepper. Scoop some batter into the center of waffle iron and cook until golden brown.

Vegetable waffles

This is a smart way to get picky eaters to happily devour their veggies. Grated potato, chopped spinach or kale, chopped roasted cauliflower or broccoli, or even diced bell pepper are ideal.

Cheesy herb waffles

Simply add a handful or two of Parmesan grated cheese to your batter and stir in any herbs (Dried oregano/basil/thyme or fresh parsley) and spices (Paprika) you like.

Pineapple and ham/bacon waffles

Add these ingredients before folding in the egg whites.

To make basic batter:

  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 3 X 60g eggs separated
  • 1 1/2 cups milk
  • 125 g butter, melted

  1. Sift flour, baking powder, and salt into a large bowl.
  2. Stir in sugar. Make a well in the centre and add egg yolks, milk, butter, gradually stir into the mixture.
  3. Beat the mixture to a smooth batter.
  4. Whisk egg whites until stiff and fold into batter.

Chef’s note: Waffles are best frozen in an airtight container. Do not refreeze frozen waffles that have been defrosted.
